Data Story – A Synchrotech training program to embed Power BI and a self-service culture within the Statistics Department of the Canton of Valais

The Valais Cantonal Service for Statistics and Equalisation (SSTP) is responsible for conducting and coordinating various statistical surveys. It manages the intermunicipal financial equalisation fund and liaises with the federal government on matters of inter-cantonal equalisation.

A comprehensive Power BI training — bridging Microsoft standards and real-world practice

To support clients in building Power BI skills, Synchrotech offers a structured four-day training programme that combines official Microsoft content with hands-on expertise gained through real-life projects. This approach ensures not only a solid grasp of the fundamentals, but also practical application tailored to business users’ needs.

Participants leave with a clear understanding of the platform, mastery of key features, and — most importantly — the ability to apply best practices in their own reports. The programme also encourages structured self-service BI usage aligned with existing or future governance principles. Success Stories

4 days to master Power BI from A to Z

The first two days cover the essentials: “Dashboard in a Day” offers a hands-on introduction to Power BI, while “Advanced Visualisation” dives deeper into best practices for storytelling, interactivity, and design.

The following two days target more advanced users: data modelling and advanced formatting are explored in depth, followed by a DAX in a Day workshop to build efficiency in writing and using DAX formulas.

Ambition

As part of its reorganisation in line with the Cantonal Public Statistics Law (LStat), the client aimed to strengthen team autonomy in data analysis and visualisation following the rollout of new tools. The objective: to help staff better understand the tools, create meaningful reports, and adopt Power BI as a key asset for statistical work. Success Stories

Challenge

Although Power BI was already in use within the organisation, maturity levels varied significantly between departments. There was a clear need to structure the learning process to ensure a gradual skills ramp-up, foster a shared data language, and prevent bad practices in data modelling and report design. While self-service BI brought real value, it required a clear framework and shared best practices to ensure report consistency and data reliability, in alignment with the BI governance principles being defined.

Solution

We designed a tailored four-day training programme, structured around thematic modules that combined official Microsoft content with our hands-on expertise. Up to 12 participants from various departments took part in the programme.

The Power BI training delivered by Synchrotech was a truly rewarding experience. Their teaching approach — based on a structured framework, strong clarity, and real-life examples — enabled all participants to upskill quickly. The content was perfectly tailored to our needs and enriched by genuine hands-on expertise. The trainer created a motivating learning environment and remained attentive to each participant, regardless of their level or expectations. A trusted partner we wholeheartedly recommend.
